Sam and Her Dog

Meet Samantha Johnston, Founder & Lead Strategist

Sam loves adventure, specifically the kind that requires planes, trains and automobiles to the most remote corners of the world. There’s no place she’d rather be than outside skiing, hiking, biking, paddleboarding… you get the idea. If you catch her inside, she’s likely trying a new hot sauce or glass of champagne, both of which she thinks go with anything, anytime. Sam loves dogs, but the old ones have an extra special place in her heart.

But if you want to get down to business, Sam is a seasoned media executive with a proven track record of building the kind of company culture that drives business results. She has more than 20 years of media management experience with specialties in:

  • Sales management and talent development
  • Organizational change
  • Philanthropic fundraising and consumer revenue
  • Leadership coaching and development
  • Strategic alignment

She provides leadership development and coaching for high-level leaders, guides leadership teams toward strategic alignment and creating North Star visions and assists businesses of all sizes in aligning talent, resources and culture to drive desired operational outcomes.

Samantha’s career titles have included media manager, healthcare executive, political consultant, fire department firefighter/lieutenant and non-profit director.

Sam holds a B.A. degree in Journalism from Colorado State University and an M.B.A. from Regis University in Denver. She also holds the SHRM-SCP certification.

DOGS WE HAVE LOVED

If you couldn’t tell, we love dogs around here.

Vernon is a Blue Tick Coonhound who hails from Mobile, Alabama. He was adopted from American Black & Tan Coonhound Rescue in May 2022 after a Good Samaritan found him emaciated and being attacked by a pack of roaming dogs. It’s anyone’s guess how old he is. His listed birthday is 5 1/2 years old, but we think he acts about 2 1/2. He howls at the blender and the coffee grinder but sleeps through black bears in our backyard. He’s as stubborn as a mule and as sweet as Tupelo honey. And we love him endlessly already.

Ernie - the inspiration

The inspiration and soul behind Strategy Hound. After nine years in an Arkansas shelter, good people helped him break out of jail and he found his forever home at age 9. He was a through-and-through hunting hound, but his early beginnings left him in pretty poor health. He liked to sleep all day and party all night. Kind of like us… 20 years ago. He passed away at 10-and-a-half years old in February 2022.

Maggie - with a tennis ball

Adopted at 13-and-a-half years old, this angel never missed an opportunity to chase a tennis ball, eat her veggies or impress a stranger by defying all the rules at exactly the wrong time. Her Mickey Mouse ears were legendary. She crossed the Rainbow Bridge just shy of her 16th birthday in August 2020. We miss “Maggles” every day.

Murphy - best worst dog

Affectionately and appropriately dubbed “the best worst dog.” Though he came from a puppy mill, he had no idea his life was supposed to be a challenge. He was as stubborn as a mule with a heart as big as Texas. He was photographed on top of more than a dozen Colorado 14ers and also earns the distinction of shredding an entire couch between the time Sam left for the gym and returned two hours later.

Bodie - best dog in town

The OG “best dog in town.” Sam’s college buddy and the only dog she ever owned who would act too old to do literally anything she asked him to do, but would Houdini out of the yard to walk into town to her office for a few treats when the urge struck him.

GIVING BACK TO WHAT WE VALUE

We love supporting good people who are doing purpose-driven work to make the world a better place. When you do business with Strategy Hound, we will support a local non-profit in honor of you. We’re based in the Roaring Fork Valley of Colorado and believe strongly in so many local non-profits.

Currently, we are supporting Huts for Vets and Lucky Day Animal Rescue. We’ve got a soft spot for our country’s heroes and dogs who deserve a better life than the one they know.
